One of the ministries of YFC in Kenya is the Rehab Centre.
This is where young women come to gain life skills and learn crafts, tailoring and cooking, to equip them to earn a living.
Each day begins with Bible study
and everyone takes part.
Lucy and I spent three days there last week. The day we
arrived we were introduced to each of the girls and what is happening there.
Here Rita is making a pattern in preparation for sewing a
garment
and Sheila is getting ready to sew.
The girls also learn to make articles from glass beads,
paper bead making, cooking and several other skills.
Lucy and I were there to teach them to crochet.
For three days they sat and crocheted. Some caught on really
quickly but some diligently tried and unpicked and tried again for three whole
days.
I was amazed at their determination to keep on keeping on
until they could manage to crochet. Not one girl gave up! We had a lot of fun
over those few days as the girls warmed to the ‘strangers’ and welcomed us
warmly into their midst.
The girls encouraged each other along
and even little Jonathan wanted to have a go.
Do you like the earrings Dorcas made?
On Thursday, Wangari, a
lovely woman that God had connected me with the week earlier, came to visit. Wangari
has a business that sells beautifully crocheted African dolls,
animals
and toys.
She and Sarah, the young
woman who heads up the Rehab Centre, got along really well and I’m interested
to see what comes of that connection in the future.
We both really enjoyed ourselves and Lucy is keen to go back and
spend another day there with the girls before she leaves for home on 13th
July. I expect to be back there too.
