Farewell to the girls at Satellie

At the YFC 'rehab centre' in Satellite (an area of Nairobi), vulnerable young women learn skills to give them an opportunity to build a future for their families. Lucy and the girls had such a great time together earlier in her time here that Lucy chose to spend her last day with them rather than go to the baby rhino and elephant orphanage.  I thoroughly approved of her choice.

While working with the girls a couple of weeks earlier, Lucy had committed to crochet several items for the girls and some of their children.

Leg warmers for Dorcas

 socks for Jonathan

and socks for Purity.

Lucy's other grandmother, Grandma, and some of the ladies from her church, had knitted many woolen squares ready to be joined together into blankets.

On Lucy's last day we joined them together

into blankets for each of the girls.

Each girl sewed her own squares together

under the watchful eye of their teacher, Sarah.

Jonathan is always keen to join in whatever is going

and at the end of the day there were all well on their way to completion.

Sheila was ready to model the poncho she had crocheted since we were there last. She really did get the hang of crochet.

And as part of Lucy's farewell, we took a photo of everyone.
They also gave Lucy a hand made card which they all signed in appreciation of her time with them, and a small padded zip purse which she now keeps her phone in. Time at Satellite with the girls was a real highlight of Lucy's time in Kenya and I'm so thankful that she was able to share her skills and friendship with these girls.
I'm sure they are part of the reason Lucy is keen to return sometime in the future.

Kenya YFC

I arrived in Nairobi, Kenya just over a week ago. I love Africa and its so good to be back.

My boss while I'm here is Anna, the National Director of YFC in Kenya. I first met Anna at the YFC International General Assembly in Denver in 2011 and our paths crossed again in Ethiopia in 2016  when she invited me to come to Kenya sometime. And so now, here I am. Thank you for the invitation, Anna. It's so good to be here with you and your team.

My first day at the office, last Friday, was a staff meeting (admin staff only) - perfect timing to meet them all.  I'm going to enjoy working alongside this team. I'll meet the other members of YFC Kenya as time goes by.

The YFC office is at the end of a quiet, green road in Westlands.

and the property is shared with a manufacturing company.

The sign on the front door is very simple

and I especially liked the one on the toilet door. Hope you can read it!
